Programme information

This programme is designed to introduce and bring together theories, models, styles and philosophies of leadership and their practical application in the context of sport. These understandings provide students with essential leadership knowledge as well as critical psychosocial, socio-cultural, and developmental knowledge about sport. This will enable students to appreciate and gain an insight into the need to constantly adapt their leadership approach and practices to match and anticipate the ever-changing situations and environments that sport organisations confront.

Core study areas include: leadership models and practices: applications to a sport context; sport leadership retreat; sustainability and leadership for sport organisations; critically reflective leadership and sport management practice; analysing the construction of leadership for a sport context; collaborative project; an individual project (which can be a dissertation or business plan or placement project).

Optional study areas include: sports management theory and practice; intellectual property; strategy and planning.

Subject enhancement areas include: design thinking; media and creative industries: context and practices; media and creative industries: critical perspectives; introduction to mobile internet and media clouds; principles of entrepreneurship and innovation.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a combination of written assignments, group exercises, presentations and time constrained assignments. Subject to your choices, there may also be exams.

Entry qualification

Upper second class honours degree or equivalent in a wide range of subjects.

English Language requirements: IELTS 6.5 overall, with a minimum of 6.0 in each subtest (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking) or equivalent. 

Careers and further study

This programme prepares students for careers in middle and senior leadership positions in government, commercial, not-for-profit and international sporting organisations.
