Lauren Wray

Manufacturing Engineer

I was able to use my degree to get onto the graduate scheme as they were looking for different subjects not just engineering.

I have a very analytical mind set so could look into problems and work out solutions.

Post 16 Education: A Levels Maths, Chemistry & Sport

Higher Education: BSc Chemistry

Lauren’s experience as a student

Tough but enjoyable.

I made friends for life and also met my fiancé; so I would say the best 3 years so far. I was in the University Swim Team and represented the University at BUCs (British Universities and Colleges Sport*) for the 3 years I was there and got 2 bronze medals.

Every part of the Chemistry degree was different. A lot of curly arrows and time in labs, writing up lab reports, but also a laugh as you had time to talk to the others in your subject due to the labs.

Lauren's Career

I am not allowed to disclose too much. But I am a Manufacturing Engineer at BAE systems. My job is managing change from the engineers and telling the planners what is happening and what needs to happen on their side.

Lauren's advice

Don't think too much into the future.

I only decided to do Chemistry after looking at universities.

Do something you love as it's a long time to do something and have fun whilst you're at it.

British Universities and Colleges Sport

(BUCS) has a simple mission - create the best university sport experience in the world. BUCS works with its member institutions to get more students active more often, through traditional competitive sport and providing physical activity opportunities. Amongst many other activities BUCS offers a programme of intervarsity competitions throughout the academic year.

Industrial Placements

The graduate job market is highly competitive, so having first-hand practical work experience can help you stand out from the crowd. This is why we offer students on all our undergraduate degrees the opportunity to take advantage of our Industrial Placement scheme.

A year spent on professional placement between your second and third year of study can give you valuable work experience, develop your interpersonal skills and even introduce you to your future employer. Studies show that a placement year can really help you stand out in the competitive graduate jobs' market.

Loughborough University offers undergraduate degrees (BSc and MChem) in:

Chemistry, Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Natural Sciences, Chemistry and Computing.

Chemistry OpenPlus - A flexible route to a degree in Chemistry offered in partnership with the Open University.

Chemistry with a Foundation Year - For candidates who for some reason have not had the opportunity to study the pre-requisite subjects needed for first year entry.
