Project details

The acceleration of market penetration of fully electrified vehicles (EVs) is expected to be significant over the next 15-20 years, reaching 30% in the USA alone. A 2022 report by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) details how an estimated $300bn has been invested into electrified powertrain research and development via global automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) already. Moreover, there is significant industrial interest in the provision of bespoke lubricants for electric drive units (EDUs). The optimised lubricant must provide cooling, minimise wear, promote machine element durability, vast material compatibility, whilst enabling high efficiency EDUs, a key pillar in achieving sustainable mobility globally.

A key bottleneck in achieving the above objectives is to control electric conductivity of the lubricant (e-fluid), to achieve optimised electrical characteristics. This can be achieved by developing tailored additives for the lubricant. This PhD project will focus on developing and implementing novel lubricant additives, capable of delivering a controlled level of electrical conductivity. The project will be part of a larger team, comprising supervisors, experienced researchers and other PhD students.

The proposed research will require a combination of numerical and experimental methods to deliver the expected outcome. The ideal candidate for this PhD position will demonstrate a genuine and sustained enthusiasm for experimental research in tribology. We are seeking an individual who is motivated not only by the performance outcomes of friction, wear, and lubrication experiments, but also by the investigative process itself—someone who finds intellectual energy in designing tribological test rigs, refining measurement techniques, and identifying complex surface interaction behaviours to uncover the fundamental mechanisms governing material response.

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong academic background and a passion for advancing green technologies. The ideal applicant will have:

  • A first-class or high 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • Experience of working on tribology and lubrication, and automotive applications
  • Relevant experience in computational simulation is desirable (e.g., finite element analysis, CFD) and experimental testing of mechanical systems.
  • Relevant experience in 3D design is desirable (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • An interest in sustainable energy technologies and the engineering challenges associated with lubrication systems.

Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, February 2027 and July 2027. UK tuition fees for 2026/27 are currently to be confirmed pending the release of the UKRI recommended rates. Once published, these rates will be subject to formal approval by the University before being confirmed.

This studentship is for 3-years and provides a minimum tax-free stipend of £20,780 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees.  Funding for this studentship is awarded on a competitive basis and is not guaranteed; availability will depend on the outcome of the selection process and subject to final approval by the University.
