Project details
If education research is to have an impact on practice, then its findings must be communicated to practitioners. How can we do this effectively? In recent years it has become commonplace to try to communicate research findings directly to teachers via accessible platforms such as the Teaching and Learning Toolkit or the What Works Clearinghouse. These platforms are extremely popular: up to two-thirds of schools in England report that they have consulted the Teaching and Learning Toolkit to inform their practice. However, we know that communicating findings in this way is fraught with difficulties. For instance Lortie-Forgues et al. (2021, How Should Educational Effects Be Communicated to Teachers?) recently showed that the particular choice of metric used to quantify an intervention's effectiveness (e.g., months of progress, Cohen's U3, Cohen's d, raw test scores, etc.) substantially influence teachers' perceptions of efficacy. Similarly, we have demonstrated that including measures of uncertainty around effect size estimates also influences teacher perceptions.
The goal of this project is to (i) extend this work by exploring how teachers understand effect size estimates, (ii) investigate how teachers use effect size toolkits, and (iii) to develop and test interventions that will help toolkit users interpret the information presented more accurately. The project will be informed by work in health communication.
The successful student will join the Centre for Mathematical Cognition, one of the world's leading research centres for the study of mathematics education and numerical thinking. This project might be a suitable topic to form the basis of an application to the ESRC Midlands Graduate School's Open Studentship scheme (deadlines are typically in January) via the education pathway. Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
