Project details

This project is an exciting opportunity to undertake industrially linked research in partnership with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) and the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Engineering Hydrogen Net-Zero (EnerHy-CDT). This exciting opportunity is based within Loughborough University at the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering and Department of Materials, which conduct cutting edge research into sustainable high-performance materials for tribology and hydrogen interface engineering. This PhD will inlock future career prospects in related areas of hydrogen-systems, or in turbomachinery.

The global transition toward sustainable energy systems has placed hydrogen at the forefront as a clean and versatile energy carrier. However, realizing its full potential requires overcoming significant engineering challenges in the design and operation of liquid and gaseous hydrogen systems. This project aims to address these challenges by developing advanced solutions for critical components such as bearings, seals, and power transmission mechanisms in pumps and motors. The successful candidate will help to establish the UK as a global leader in sustainable hydrogen interface engineering.

Vision
We are seeking a highly motivated student to focus on the design and manufacture of liquid and gaseous Hydrogen systems. Addressing challenges such as thermal contraction, Hydrogen embrittlement, permeability and sealing under cryogenic conditions. The project will explore material compatibility, fatigue under pressure cycling, and the impact of Hydrogen on welds, coatings and joints. The aim will be to address current challenges through material development, design development and innovative engineering solutions. Understanding the current Hydrogen landscape and the maturity of Hydrogen technical challenges, both gaseous and liquid, will be a key undertaking.

The research will integrate high-fidelity simulation, experimental testing, and demonstrator development to create robust, efficient, and safe hydrogen technologies. By exploring technical, economic, and sustainability aspects, the project seeks to deliver innovative designs that meet the stringent requirements of aerospace, automotive, and power generation sectors. Ultimately, this work will contribute to enabling high-performance hydrogen systems that support global decarbonization goals and the transition to a hydrogen-powered future.

Motivation 
Interfaces such as bearings, seals, and power transmission systems are critical to the performance and safety of hydrogen-based machinery. The project will focus on equipment such as pumps, motors, heat exchangers and actuators, and ancillaries such as bearings and fasteners, and their performance under various operating conditions. These components must withstand cryogenic temperatures, high rotational speeds, and chemically aggressive environments without compromising efficiency or durability. Material degradation, lubrication failures, and reduced operational lifespan remain major obstacles to scaling hydrogen systems for industrial use.

Aim
This project is motivated by the need to establish a sustainable hydrogen interface engineering framework that addresses the aforementioned challenges. Relatively new liquid and gaseous technological challenges for Hydrogen systems, particularly in the aerospace sector, require further understanding and development. By developing advanced hydrogen testing facilities and redesigning component interfaces, the research aims to minimize wear and degradation, optimize lubrication strategies, and extend service life. Through a combination of simulation, experimental validation, and demonstrator development, the project will deliver innovative solutions that accelerate the deployment of hydrogen technologies across multiple sectors—supporting the global drive toward a sustainable, net-zero future.

This research adopts a unique multi-scale and multi-physics approach, bridging fundamental science and applied engineering. Unlike conventional studies that focus on isolated aspects, this project will investigate component behaviour across different length scales—from material microstructure to full-system performance—while considering thermal, mechanical, and tribological interactions. This multidisciplinary perspective is essential because there is currently little understanding of how these critical components behave under hydrogen-specific conditions, and existing design principles are inadequate for such environments.

As a PhD student, you will work with both academics from Loughborough University and also have the opportunity to work with the engineering teams within the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). This will give you real-world experience in working within in a leading research and technology organisation at the forefront of manufacturing innovation as well as experiencing the workplace and culture within it. The MTC provides world-leading facilities, cutting edge innovation and cross sector, industry-leading experts across a range of technologies (including but not limited to; additive manufacturing, laser processing, digital technologies, metrology and NDT, information and robotics, materials engineering, digital manufacturing, modelling and simulation and product design and development).

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with a strong academic background and a passion for advancing hydrogen technologies. The ideal applicant will have:

  • A first-class or high 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Relevant experience in computational simulation (e.g., finite element analysis, CFD) or experimental testing of mechanical systems.
  • Relevant experience in 3D design (e.g., Siemens NX, SolidWorks), the design of mechanical systems and the production of engineering drawings to BS8888.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • An interest in sustainable energy technologies and the engineering challenges associated with hydrogen systems.

Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, February 2027 and July 2027. UK tuition fees for 2026/27 are currently to be confirmed pending the release of the UKRI recommended rates. Once published, these rates will be subject to formal approval by the University before being confirmed.

This studentship is for 4 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £22,027 per annum for the duration of the studentship, plus tuition fees at the UK rate. An additional sum of £3,000 per annum is provided for consumables, travel, etc. Due to funding restrictions this PhD studentship is only available to those eligible for UK fees. As this position is sponsored by the MTC, any successful candidate would need to pass the sponsors own security checks prior to the commencement of the PhD.
