Project details
Automated requirements engineering, including e.g., elicitation, analysis, and specification using artificial intelligence, has been an active field of study in software engineering for over a decade. Techniques developed in such studies are bound to focus on functional requirements that the software intends to fulfil. Sources of requirements are often established based on large quantities of customer reviews. In this specific context, unfortunately, the techniques have been unable to adapt to a more generic, systems-level context, where the sources of requirements are diverse and requirements are largely non-functional in nature.
To address the above challenges, and inspired by the recent advancements in natural language processing and conversational agents, including large and small language models and beyond, this PhD research aims at developing novel techniques to provide one or multiple of the following highly demanding industrial capabilities:
1) Elicit and derive stakeholder needs from verbal and/or written conversations with stakeholders
2) Transform stakeholder needs into a formal Requirement Specification using modelling language such as the Systems Modeling Language, or formal logic, spoken by the domain experts, e.g., system architects and design engineers in a particular subject domain.
3) Perform requirement analysis to evaluate the quality of the requirements as a set; thus, improving their quality attributes such as traceability, consistency, and completeness.
4) Validating requirements against stakeholder needs through additional verbal and/or written conversations with the stakeholders.
The candidate will have the opportunity to undertake an optional but formal one-year MSc-level training in systems engineering, designed to equip them with essential skills and knowledge in systems thinking and model-based systems engineering, regarded as essential knowledge and skills in conducting this research. This experience will enrich the PhD journey, as the candidate will join a cohort of Engineering Doctorates working in diverse areas. Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, January 2027, April 2027 and July 2027.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
How to apply
