To reflect growing opportunities in Rehabilitation Sciences, Loughborough University is launching a new MSc in Exercise Rehabilitation in Autumn 2024.

This flexible programme will enable you to develop fundamental knowledge, understanding and skills across all aspects of rehabilitation sciences in an exercise context, before giving you the opportunity to specialise in musculoskeletal rehabilitation or rehabilitation for non-communicable (chronic) diseases.

You will have the chance to gain practice-based experience, as well as undertake an independent research project to address a scientific question or real-life issue.  

You will also benefit from the research expertise and facilities available on campus, including in the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine-East Midlands, and at the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) at Stanford Hall which is expected to open in early 2025.

What you'll study

Our Exercise Rehabilitation MSc is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to work safely and effectively in a clinical/medical exercise rehabilitation setting or wider exercise and fitness industry context.

Compulsory

The Research Methods and Project Preparation module will comprise some distinct elements designed to enable students to tailor their studies according to their preferred research approach and commit more time to planning and ultimately undertaking meaningful and real projects in their specialist pathway.

Reflecting the practical/applied nature of the area, the Professional and Reflective Practice modules will equip students with the practical skills and competences required to support safe and effective rehabilitation in sport or exercise/health care contexts, whilst the pathway specific module will provide further and more in-depth coverage and insight into the psychology of rehabilitation.

Covers all aspects of Rehabilitation (to foster a holistic and multidisciplinary understanding of the area) and serve as an introduction to the subsequent modules and pathways on offer across programmes (to facilitate students’ choices of programme/pathways).

Optional modules

Critically review the role of exercise in the management, treatment and prevention of non-communicable (chronic) diseases and as an intervention to support surgical outcomes and disease risk reduction.

Develop the skills and knowledge to design, deliver and supervise: physical rehabilitation programmes for individuals with a variety of non-communicable (chronic) diseases; and resistance exercise as an intervention to support surgical outcomes, injury prevention and disease reduction.

Critically review the role of exercise in the prevention, treatment and management of musculoskeletal injury and musculoskeletal disorders, and as an intervention to support surgical outcomes and disease risk reduction.

Develop the skills and knowledge to design, deliver and supervise physical rehabilitation programmes for individuals with a variety of musculoskeletal disorders and injuries, as well as to support surgical outcomes, injury prevention and disease reduction.

The NCSEM is an Olympic legacy project delivering education, research and clinical services in sport, exercise and physical activity. It aims to apply world-class expertise to policies and practice that will benefit the health and wellbeing of the nation – from everyday people at risk of ill health through to elite athletes.

The NRC, expected to open to patients in early 2025, will transform outcomes for people who have suffered potentially life-changing injury, trauma or illness, by fully integrating research, innovation, education and training with clinical practice.

Applicants from colleges affiliated to universities which are above 500 in the Shanghai rankings will be considered as follows:
