What is the Post Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCert)? This programme is for new lecturers to prepare you for your academic role of research, teaching and innovation. Successful completion of the programme leads to Fellowship of Advance HE and a Post Graduate Certificate.

Your role as an academic at Loughborough University or a lecturer at Loughborough College requires you to be competent in your research, innovation and teaching activities and this programme will be supporting you and equipping you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to be a successful academic.

The programme is a mixture of blended learning: 6 Core Study Days; self-study through learning from workshops of your choice; opportunities in your School to shadow or observe peers; four teaching observations. The programme has three 20 credit modules, integrated within the six core study days. Each module has an assessment attached to it. You will be introduced to key pedagogy, reflective cycles and Loughborough documentation and processes to support you evaluating, enhancing and developing your academic practice.

  • Training provider: Loughborough University
  • Entry requirements: New Lecturer (RTE contracts) starters to Loughborough University will be contacted by a member of the Enhanced Academic Practice team to identify if the PGCert is appropriate for you; this is dependent on your previous experience and qualifications gained.

Other requirements

  • You must not be in full time education;
  • You must accept a contract of employment offered after a recruitment and selection process (this is a University requirement);
  • You will need to complete Post Graduate Admissions documents and will be given a student card.

As you are completing this as part of your contract of employment, your qualifications will have been considered during recruitment and selection hence you do not need to supply other documentation.

However, you will need to apply for the programme through the Post Graduate Admissions; we will support you with this process.

This 60-credit programme comprises of three 20 credit modules that are delivered through an integrated approach within the programme. There will be support for each module assessment; core delivery will be through the six study days.

During the PGCert, you will need to have four teaching observations in total: Two conducted by peers in your School and Two through our main Teaching Observation scheme (your course mentor is a trained University Teaching Observer who will conduct your first of these Teaching Observations).

Learn will be the main system that you will use for this programme. Some individual workshops might be through Teams. There is a Teams channel for the programme where our Staff – Participant – Liaison Committee takes place and also the monthly drop-ins.

There are Six Core Study Days (three together at the beginning of the programme and 3 throughout the first year). Any workshops from our open programme that you feel would benefit your professional learning and development, we encourage you to book onto independently. You can discuss ‘which’ workshops might be useful for your independent learning with your course mentor and academic adviser. You will need to attend the workshops that support your New Lecturer Programme (NLP) if you are a Loughborough University lecturer.

You will have 6 Progress Review Meetings as part of the programme; these will take place with your course mentor and academic adviser.

During the programme, you will have 6 meetings with your course mentor and academic adviser. There are monthly drop-ins with the PGCert Programme Director if you have any questions about the programme. There are coffee mornings provided with other new lecturers to support networking. To support module assessments, there are dedicated supportive sessions.
