School of Social Sciences and Humanities

Student experience

All of the undergraduate courses in the School include the option to take a professional placement year in industry. In the 2017-18 academic year, 144 students will be taking up this opportunity in locations such as the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Apple, Renault, Leicester Tigers, Xerox, PwC, Field Studies Council, Sky, OFGEM, IBM, GSK and L’Oréal. This represents over a 400% increase in the number of students going out on placement over the last 4 years.

Placements provide our students with a valuable opportunity to gain work experience before graduating and they can also gain an additional qualification – a Diploma in Professional Studies – at the end of their placement. As well as earning a salary for the year, many of our students have also been successful in securing permanent jobs with their placement companies post-graduation.

To help our students in finding and securing professional placements, and support them whilst they are on placement, the School provides a Placements Officer as well as an academic member of staff in the role of Placement Director.
