Loughborough School of Design and Creative Arts launch scholarship in memory of alumnus

The Rhys Jenkins Opportunity Scholarship has been set up in memory of Rhys Jenkins, a graduate of the Industrial Design programme at Loughborough, who sadly passed away whilst travelling in India in 2019.

Rhys’ family wanted to commemorate him with an ongoing award, used to support disadvantaged students within the School.

Throughout the year the family are running a number of fundraisers, including Run with Rhys, held on 3 October to mark Rhys’ birthday. These events will raise the funds needed for the scholarship and have already been very successful,  with last year’s run raising £7,755. You can find out more on their Instagram and JustGiving pages.

The first SDCA student recipient of the scholarship is due to start in October and will receive support throughout their time at Loughborough.

Rachel Third, Director of Philanthropy:

“Opportunity Scholarships are vital in supporting talented students from less advantaged backgrounds in their Loughborough journey. Students who are the first in their family to come to university, who are from low-income families or from areas of multiple deprivation in the UK often face barriers in entering Higher Education which can put them at a disadvantage compared to their peers.

The scholarship levels the playing field by providing financial security and enabling the student to make the most of a life-shaping university experience.”
