Loughborough University recently hosted its Research and Innovation (R&I) Impact and Engagement Day, bringing together colleagues from across the institution to explore how research connects with and influences audiences beyond academia.

The event opened with an expert panel featuring current and former REF sub-panel members Mark King, Rosemary Hunter and Barry Bogin, who shared insights into what constitutes an outstanding impact case study. The discussion emphasised that impactful research is shaped through sustained engagement, robust evidence, and a clear, compelling narrative demonstrating tangible change.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Nick Jennings CB FRS FREng reinforced the centrality of impact within the University’s strategic vision. Drawing on his own experience, he highlighted the importance of ensuring research not only advances knowledge but also delivers meaningful benefits to society.

A keynote conversation between Professor Vicky Goosey-Tolfrey and Richard Allcroft OBE provided a powerful example of research informing real-world practice. Focusing on wheelchair rugby, the session demonstrated how academic work has contributed to policy development and improvements in areas such as participation and athlete classification. The discussion underscored how research can play a direct role in shaping decision-making processes when effectively embedded within practice.

A series of lightning talks showcased the breadth and diversity of impact activity across the University, spanning themes such as health and wellbeing, sustainability and net zero, and inclusive communities.

The day also included a civic and community research panel featuring Emily Keightley, Daniel Sage, Sarah Thomson and Robert Mitchell. Panellists reflected on the importance of co-creation and partnership working with local organisations, and highlighted the critical role universities can play in supporting their communities and contributing to place-based development.
