Responsibilities on placement

Your responsibility to the student

A suitable role with a job description explaining the roles and responsibilities of the student, along with key information such as start date, deadline for application, location and the recruitment process. The Placements Team can be involved as little or as much as you need with the application process.

Once you take on a student, you will then be required to complete a Host Organisation Declaration Form and a Criteria Form, to ensure the role is suitable and create an agreement between you as the company and the University.

Employer responsibilities

  • The host organisation (ie you as the employer), must directly supervise the student during the placement.
  • You must comply with the host country’s legislation to ensure placement students are treated fairly, just like regular employees.
  • You must confirm suitable Health & Safety arrangements, insurance, and nominate a Placement Supervisor to look after the student.
  • The student should receive a clear induction, appropriate working environment and necessary equipment from you. 
  • You must inform Loughborough University of significant placement-related matters.
  • In the UK, Equality Act 2010 duties must be upheld by your organisation, respecting diversity and making reasonable adjustments.
  • Loughborough University can withdraw placement opportunities if your organisation fails to meet any of the criteria.

The student’s responsibility to you

  • To approach their work diligently, to take responsibility and display a willingness to learn and to use initiative.
  • To act within the Terms and Conditions of Employment laid down by you.
  • To behave in an appropriate professional manner and to respect the culture of your workplace.
  • To respect the confidentiality of the employing organisation.
  • To take reasonable care of their own health and safety, and that of other people who may be affected by their actions.

The Diploma in Professional Studies (DPS)

To obtain the DPS the student must complete:

  • a minimum of 35 weeks (with the aim being 45 weeks) on placement in a business-related position
  • a competent performance of duties on placement evidenced by a PDR-VSP (Performance Development Review-Verification of Satisfactory Performance) form
  • reflective written essay along with a marketing product about their placement.
