Research and Innovation Office Training Programme

We offer a range of courses for academic and research staff - all led by Research and Innovation Office colleagues.
 

How to book

Please make your bookings via MyHR. Once you've logged in to MyHR, you need to:
 
  • Click on Learning on the left of the screen
  • Click on the Courses tab
  • Type in the first few words of the course title
  • Select course and book your place

All courses will be run via Teams - with the exception of Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Awareness which will be run in-person.

How to Apply for a Mid-to-Senior Career Fellowship

This course will help you to:

  • Understand the key points to consider when writing a Fellowship application and the typical application processes, including interviews
  • Learn about different Fellowship schemes
  • Learn from a Loughborough mid- / senior- Fellowship holder
  • Learn how to present yourself and your research project, and how to demonstrate your overarching research vision

The course will run on Wednesday 15 November 2023, 2.30-3.45pm.

Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Awareness

This course will help you to understand:

  • the different forms of IP and how it is used to protect and commercialise your ideas
  • the different mechanisms available to commercialise your research
  • the commercialisation process, how to identify the value in your ideas and potentially take them to market
  • what support there is from the University

This in-person course will run on Tuesday 21 November 2023, 9.30am-12.00pm, in the Holywell Building on the Loughborough East Midlands campus.

How to Apply for a Postdoctoral or Early Career Fellowship

This course will help you to:

  • Apply for a Postdoctoral or Early Career Fellowship
  • Understand the key points to consider when writing a Fellowship application and the typical application processes, including interviews
  • Learn about different Fellowship schemes
  • Present yourself and your research project, and show you how to demonstrate your overarching research vision

You will also meet a current Loughborough ECR Fellowship Holder who will talk about their experience.

The course will run on Thursday 30 November 2023, 2.00-3.30pm.

An introduction to the UK funding landscape

This course will provide you with an:

  • Overview of the funding landscape for research activity in the UK
  • Introduction to the main funders that Loughborough academics apply to
  • Understanding of the different rules and applications systems for the key funders

This course will run twice:

  • Thursday 7 December 2023, 10.00-11.00am
  • Monday 4 March 2024, 2.00-3.00pm

Finding collaborators, and developing and managing your research proposal team

This course will help you to understand:

  • The different mechanisms for finding new collaborators, including use of SciVal
  • How to work with and manage your project team
  • The requirements for different types of project partner
  • How to engage and work with industrial partners for your research project
  • How to plan a strong management structure for your project
  • How your project team will handle any IP arising from the research

This course will run on Thursday 18 January 2024, 9.30-11.30am.

Managing your research project

This course will help you to:

  • Develop an awareness of the different stages and elements of post-award research projects, and who has responsibility for each stage and element
  • Identify good practice in managing successful research projects
  • Identify the support available to you at Loughborough
  • Understand any internal Loughborough ways of working

The course will run on Tuesday 14 May 2024, 1.00-4.00pm.

Business-led funding applications

This course will help you to:

  • Understand the landscape for business-led funding
  • Understand what different stakeholders in the collaboration may be looking for
  • Review the different schemes that Innovate UK offer
  • Build your networks to be ready for collaborative applications
  • Understand how business-led funding applications are supported by the Research and Innovation Office

The course will run on Thursday 6 June 2024, 10.00am-12.00pm.
