Opportunity Scholarships: giving together
Support students from low socioeconomic backgrounds by making a donation to Opportunity Scholarships.
We are asking you to be part of a collective approach to the way in which we can support our students through Opportunity Scholarships.
An Opportunity Scholarship awards a student with a financial gift of £3,000 a year for three years.
The scholarship supports students’ living costs. They may need to purchase course materials and computing equipment which is vital to their academic success – something many other students may take for granted.
A full scholarship is worth £9,000 over the course of three years. We know that is a big ask.
That is why we are asking you, as our alumni and friends, to give whatever you can.
Below, you will find more information about what an Opportunity Scholarship is, why we are asking you to support us, and a range of stories from some of our scholarship recipients.
If you are interested in finding out more about supporting a student by giving a full scholarship, or should you wish to have a conversation about making a different gift to the University, please get in touch.
We are appealing to you - our alumni and friends - to ask you to support us on our journey to offering more scholarships. Every donation counts towards the creation of another scholarship.
It costs £9,000 to fund one Opportunity Scholarship. Recipients of scholarships are awarded the money over a period of three years of study, and it is split into three equal instalments each year, so they receive £1,000 per term for three years of Loughborough study at undergraduate level.
Many scholars cannot rely on family income to support them during or outside of term.
Not everyone has somewhere else to go to over the holidays. Many students will stay in Loughborough, remain in halls or in their accommodation, and so their funds need to last a full year.
We need just 900 donations of £10 to create a full scholarship for a deserving Loughborough student. If you choose to donate £10, you could be part of something much bigger.
The more we raise, the more scholarships we can support.
Any amount is a generous gift towards Opportunity Scholarships.
Alex and his friends give a scholarship together
"I studied at Loughborough more than a decade ago, and I had the most brilliant time in Falkner Eggington Hall. I made friends for life.
"Loughborough and Falk Egg remain a special place for myself and my group of friends.
"We all have incredible memories of our time at university, and we wanted to make sure that another student could enjoy the same experience that we did.
"When we found out that we could make a group donation towards Opportunity Scholarships at Loughborough, we saw this as a chance to give back and to help a new student to succeed, not only in their time at university but to also support their skills development for their future career.
"You could support in a similar way. By giving a small amount of money, you can help to make a big difference."
BSc in Psychology in 2009, MSc in Sports Coaching in 2011
We are grateful for every donation that we receive. However you choose to give, and at whatever amount, your generosity will make a difference.
As a university, we are striving to increase the number of students who we can support with scholarships. It is your support that will help us to achieve this aim.
Whether you are giving a one-off gift, or committing to a monthly or annual donation, you will be supporting the next generation of Loughborough student scholars.
Thank you for your kindness. It won't go unnoticed.
A gift to Opportunity Scholarships is just the beginning
There are other ways to support the University in providing additional training and programmes for students at Loughborough.
The work of the Student Success Academy goes hand in hand with our scholarships.
If you are interested in donating a full scholarship and in finding out more about how to uplift a gift to also support the Student Success Academy, please get in touch and a member of the team will be happy to chat with you.
