Cathy Hart is a Senior Lecturer in Retailing at the School of Business and Economics at Loughborough University. Originally a textile design graduate from Loughborough University School of the Arts, Cathy was a marketing manager in the textiles and retail industries for 11 years before joining the School.

Since joining the School in 1992 as the Sainsbury Retail Fellow, Cathy has held various management and leadership responsibilities including academic programme management, Placements Director and is currently Head of SBE Alumni for the School. Cathy lectures in retailing and logistics / Supply Chain Management to undergraduate students at BSc level and post-graduate delegates at MSc and MBA levels.

Cathy has a successful track record in securing and leading funded research projects. Grant funders include the Learning and Skills Council, ESRC, and Industry partners the British Retail Consortium, Association of Convenience Stores, Argos, Boots, Sainsbury’s. In 2005 Cathy secured funding from and led the LSC / Skillsmart Retail funded project ‘Buying into Retail’, researching the Skills, Training and Business issues in the East Midlands Retail Industry.

Cathy has focused on town centre research for the past 15 years. Her ongoing research into the ‘Town Centre Customer Experience’ was funded by the ESRC. She has given many invited keynote talks and presentations to industry and at Government events.

Cathy is a member of the Marketing and Retailing Research Group, and has published and presented widely in the areas of retail skills development, and retail marketing in journals including The European Journal of MarketingThe Journal of Marketing Management, The Service Industries Journal, The International Journal of Retail and Distribution Management and the International Review of Retail, Distribution and Consumer Research.

Cathy has developed close working links and partnerships within the retail industry and retail education. Her continued collaborations with retail companies resulted in sponsorship from Sainsbury’s, Barclays, Waitrose, Wing Yip, and has been recognised with the Dean’s Award for Impact.

Cathy has co-edited and authored two books of cases in retail management. She has served on various industry committees including the National Retail Training Council (NRTC); the Retail E-Commerce Task Force, Foresight Programme, DTI.

Cathy was HE representative on the Board of the Retail Sector Skills Council, serving on various retail qualifications steering groups. She was External Examiner at the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD); and the Universities of Stirling, Brighton, Heriot Watt, Bournemouth, Surrey, Manchester Metropolitan, Oxford Brookes and De Montfort Universities.
