Loughborough University inspired me in many ways.

Loughborough University was one of the few to offer a course in artificial intelligence, so my interest in this area led me here. On the UCAS Open Day, I got to see current projects and speak to other AI students. I loved the campus tour and seeing all the sport pitches – especially the cricket pitches. Additionally, I could commute from home to Loughborough quickly and inexpensively.

I loved the teaching methods and the one-to-one sessions with lecturers, where I could get answers to any queries regarding the modules. I also liked the practical sessions as they helped me to learn new skills. The labs were interesting and more interactive than lectures. I preferred coursework to exams as I loved programming and worked well under pressure.

My favourite module was Object Oriented Programming in first year as it taught two of my favourite programming languages. I also liked a later project, which was the collaboration of 3 devices to perform tasks. These devices were Myo armband, Oculus Rift and Nao robots. I enjoyed this project because it was challenging and brought out the best in me.

I did a placement at British Gas, based in Leicester. The placement improved my programming skills in various languages including C, C# and Python and I worked on Microsoft Access Databases, SQL, VB.Net and HTML. I also improved my soft skills such as team working, problem solving and presentation skills.

I liked the support that was provided at the university, varying from library workshops, careers support, disability support and opportunities like programme representing and peer mentoring to improve skills and confidence.

I’m not the type of person who enjoys going on night outs or to clubs, but the extensive range of societies at Loughborough provided a social atmosphere for everyone. As I didn’t go out, I joined the Hindu Society where I met other likeminded people. Other than that, I loved badminton, so I attended My Lifestyle badminton sessions to meet new people with similar interests.

Loughborough University inspired me in many ways. The Careers Network gave me confidence in finding a job; the extra-curricular activities (such as committees, programme representing and volunteering) improved my communication and networking skills. Finally, my lecturers motivated me to focus on my ambitions. Collectively, these have inspired and developed me so much over the four years I was at University.
