Workshop

Learn how to write comedy characters, even if you're not that funny.

For Loughborough University students only

Join us for a free three-hour writing workshop with experienced guidance from Carolyn Scott-Jeffs & Tom Stevenson.

About this workshop

There will be an exploration of character comedy, followed by set exercises on creating new characters, developing existing characters, and how to make them funny in the context of your story. The session will conclude by sharing examples of work and receiving feedback.

About Carolyn Scott-Jeffs

Carolyn is a Midlands based writer. Her work for Radio 4 includes Angel of New Street, Square Circle Triangle (nominated for the Richard Imison Award), Tarnished Wings, 21 Conversations with a Hairdresser, 15 Ways to Leave Your Lover, and Jesus, The Devil and a Kid Called Death. She has written for the BBC1 continuing drama, Doctors, and lectures in story design at Loughborough University. As a dramaturg she recently supported the musical Judy in the West End. Her stage plays include Having it All, Wenches, Out in the Garden (Finborough Theatre, London)Tarnished Angel (Finborough Theatre, London), Elephants, Fanny a New Musichall (winner of Best Production, Birmingham Fest), Wolfie and the Showgirl (winner of Best New Work, Birmingham Fest), Letters to Emma, and Edifying Eddy.

About Tom Stevenson

Tom graduated with a BSc in Music Production from De Montfort University in 2014 before transitioning to a career as a Creative Arts teacher until 2019. During his teaching tenure, he founded Elemental Theatre Company, dedicated to creating and showcasing original plays by local writers. Tom has worked as a professional actor and presenter for five years whilst earning his MA in Theatre from Loughborough University in 2022. Currently, He is pushing a PhD focused on the affect of sound in the theatre. Alongside his academic and acting pursuits, Tom has penned numerous plays performed by theatre companies across the UK.

This workshop will be taking place on the first floor of the Stewart Mason building. There is step-free access to the room via a lift which can be accessed on the right as you enter via the main entrance.
