Joe Jackson (History and Politics 2019) has established Starting Out Sports, a website designed to support and guide aspiring professionals looking to get into the sports industry.

Joe was inspired to start the platform after finding that a lot of advice was scattered across one-off coffee chats and social media threads. He wanted to create a platform where people could access a range of resources in one place. He said:

I wanted to build something that helps people take those first steps into sport. Not in a flashy or overcomplicated way, but something practical, supportive, and honest.

“Whether it’s learning what roles exist, figuring out how to stand out in an application, or hearing from people who’ve been through it, the goal is to make the path into the industry feel a bit clearer and a lot more accessible.”

Joe completed a placement year in the sports industry during his time at Loughborough. He said:

“Loughborough played a big part in shaping my journey. Being surrounded by so many people who were passionate about sport gave me the bug. It also showed me just how broad the industry is, and how many different ways there are to be involved in it beyond just coaching or performance.”

He offered the following advice to students and recent graduates taking their first steps in the sports industry:

“My biggest bit of advice is to just get started. Don’t wait until you feel 100% ready, because no one ever does. Take on side projects, volunteer, write, make stuff, whatever gets you closer to the area you want to work in.

“Be curious and ask questions. People are usually more open to helping than you think, especially if you show genuine interest and don’t just ask for a job.

“And finally, don’t stress if your first job isn’t your dream one. Just get in, learn loads, meet people, and build from there. The industry rewards people who stick at it and keep learning.”
