Georgia Collis (Mechanical Engineering 2024) has been selected to take part in the FutureSense Foundation’s Global Leadership Programme as a group mentor and project implementor.

This programme focuses on empowering local communities through sustainable development initiatives. In Palampur, India, Georgia will be working directly with local communities, mentoring groups and implementing projects that aim to create a lasting positive impact. Georgia said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge I gained at Loughborough to make a real difference.”

When asked to share her inspiration behind joining the FutureSense Foundation’s Global Leadership Programme, Georgia reflected:

“My inspiration to join the FutureSense Foundation's Global Leadership Programme stems directly from a growing passion for STEM engagement, particularly with young people. This journey really took off during my time at Loughborough, from volunteering with Robogals (part of the LSU) to my involvement with the James Dyson Foundation during my placement (at Dyson, secured with support from Wolfson Placements team). Witnessing the spark of curiosity in children discovering STEM was incredibly rewarding and ultimately fuelled my final year university dissertation project, 'EngineEco'.

“This project, which focused on engaging young girls with sustainable engineering, solidified my desire to design and implement impactful STEM initiatives. Having now experienced different cultures while backpacking through Southeast Asia and New Zealand after graduating, I'm incredibly eager to apply this passion and the skills I've developed to a new cultural context in India with the FutureSense Foundation.”

Georgia added:

“A close friend from Loughborough, who was actively involved in RAG and served as a Challenge Leader for FutureSense, introduced me to the fantastic work they do, further inspiring me to get involved.”

She shared the following advice to fellow alumni and current students who are considering taking part in a global development programme:

It's a fantastic chance to make a tangible positive impact while experiencing significant personal and professional growth. Loughborough's focus on practical skills and leadership development, evident in the many opportunities from projects to student societies, provides an excellent foundation for this kind of work. You'll be well-equipped to tackle real-world challenges and collaborate effectively in new environments. You'll have the opportunity to apply your specific skills, learn about global issues firsthand, and develop crucial teamwork abilities.

“It's also a great way to build an international network – I've already started connecting with other participants virtually. Importantly, these programmes aren't limited to students or recent grads; anyone with a desire to contribute to rural communities worldwide should explore this. It can also open doors to new and rewarding career opportunities. Be prepared for a challenging yet incredibly rewarding experience that will broaden your horizons and leave a lasting impact.”

To make the project a success, Georgia is raising funds to support such FutureSense Foundations projects and contribute to the local initiatives.
