The book follows the adventures of Giles and his father on a road trip they took. They toured England and Wales in 1988 and 1989, covering 92 football league grounds. During the trip they visited the stadiums, took photos and enjoyed some quality time as father and son.
This period marked a time of significant change in English football, as the Bradford fire of 1985 and the Hillsborough disaster of 1989 forced clubs to rethink and rebuild for fan safety.
His father passed away in 2017 and Giles wanted to do something with all the photos from the trip, which his dad had lovingly organised despite not being into football.
The book has been published by Conker Editions and used the over 200 of the original photos, with some words from Giles on each club they visited.
In 2000, Giles did the trip again with some friends including Matt Mosey who was his next-door neighbour at Harry French accommodation, East Grove.
On graduating in 1997, Giles was able to secure his first full-time role at BBC Sport through the connections he had made at Loughborough. He is currently Global Development Producer at BBC Sport. Discover more about Giles’s book Head for the Floodlights.
