Flt Lt Rob Thomas has been selected for the world-famous Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, and he will fly in the 2025 season as Red 2.
A testament to Flt Lt Thomas’s flying skills, Red Arrows pilots must have completed 1,500 flying hours in a fast-jet, be seen as ‘above average’ in their flying roles, and have completed at least one frontline tour of duty.
Flt Lt Thomas previously flew the RAF’s Typhoon aircraft on operations and exercises around the globe. He will now fly a distinctive Hawk fast-jet.
Commenting on his appointment to the team, he said:
“When I found out I’d been selected to be part of the team I was so incredibly pleased and I couldn’t wait to share the news with my family. I am still buzzing!
“I am looking forward to many aspects of my new role in the team. The flying element will be challenging but also rewarding and I’m really excited at the prospect of meeting so many people at airshows across the UK.
“The team inspired me to join the RAF and I would love to be part of inspiring the next generation too, through our displays and ground events.”
Ready to take on the necessary pre-season training, Flt Lt Thomas joins Squadron Leader Jon Bond’s team at their base in Lincolnshire.
His previous experience will be combined with precise formation flying as Flt Lt Thomas becomes one of the nine display pilots for the 2025 season. He and members of the team will be flying several times a day, initially in small formations and building up to the trademark Diamond Nine formation.
Flt Lt Thomas studied Aeronautical Engineering at Loughborough and graduated in 2005.
He joins the Red Arrows following what was described as a “standout” 60th season - in which Flt Lt Stuart Roberts completed his three years with the team.
Our Red Arrows alumni have delivered various guest lectures to students, and also performed a standout flypast for graduation in 2018.
The 61st season will commence in around May next year.
Congratulations, Rob.
