Marcus Rhodes (Economics and Social History 1982) has completed the Annapurna Base Camp hike for the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA), a charity in the UK.

Marcus suffered a life-changing spinal cord injury nearly nine years ago due to an accident where he was paralysed from the neck down by a freak wave in Tenerife. Thankfully, two swimmers saved him.

He was in intensive care for a week in Tenerife then was flown to Bristol hospital where they successfully removed the crushed discs in his neck. Following this he started to get some movement back in his fingers and toes. He was then transferred to a specialist spinal rehab centre for six months where he spent time learning to walk again.

After months of rehabilitation, hard work and the support of his family and friends, he was fortunate enough to slowly recover. In late October, Marcus felt ready and challenged himself to trek with his son Monty to Annapurna Base Camp. They are aiming to raise £20,000 for the charity.
