Loughborough alumna collects MBE

Christine Payne (Psychology 1978) was recognised in the King's first Birthday Honours List last year and recently collected her award from Buckingham Palace where she met Anne, the Princess Royal.

She received a Member of the Order of British Empire (MBE) for services to the trade union movement.

Christine was elected General Secretary of the trade union Equity in 2005 and retired in 2020. She was the first woman to be elected to this post. She served on the TUC General Council and Executive Committee. With Christine's leadership, the membership of Equity rose from 35,000 to just under 50,000.

Christine graduated from Loughborough University in 1978 with a degree in Psychology. She then attended Middlesex Polytechnic where she achieved a Diploma in Industrial Relations and Trade Union Studies.

Congratulations to Christine on her achievement.
