In a bid to tackle the pervasive issue of air pollution in the London Underground, alumna Tanya Beri (Graphic Communication 2016 and MA User Experience Design 2020) has launched CAIR London.

This is a groundbreaking mobile application aimed at minimising commuters’ exposure to harmful pollutants during their travels on the London Underground.

Although public transportation is more environmentally friendly, certain routes on the London Underground pass through areas with high levels of air and noise pollution. CAIR London helps users to navigate the city with peace of mind and directs users along the most time-efficient route that minimises exposure to pollution.

Tanya commented:

“Nobody should have to struggle to breathe through the consequences of something out of their control. Travelling to work, using the Tube to visit family or meeting friends in central London should not come at the cost of our health – and what’s worse, nobody seems to be aware of the problem.”

Tanya’s journey started during her master's degree at Loughborough whilst conducting her MA research project: Designing for behaviour change.

After graduating, Tanya won public choice awards in the UX design award 2020. This encouraged her to develop the idea into a business with the traction it gained during this time.

In 2023, Tanya won the Young Innovators award from Innovate UK securing a grant and business support, which elevated the concept into a working prototype. She was also part of LUinc. (Loughborough University’s business incubator) from 2021 – 2022 which offered her support when she set up her business.
