This programme provides an opportunity to gain in-depth understanding of the nutritional and metabolic demands of exercise, of the interactions between diet, exercise and health, and of how nutrition influences sports performance.

Programme information

The programme is designed to provide graduates with training in sport and exercise nutrition which will equip them for future careers in research, teaching in higher education, in industry, or in applied sports nutrition support. It is not a substitute for a dietetic qualification.

This programme is available for part-time applicants who have a pre-arranged, confirmed placement (eg with the Loughborough University Sports Development Centre, Sport National Governing Body, English Institute of Sport etc).

Core study areas include sport and exercise nutrition, exercise and immunology, physiology of endurance performance, applied nutrition, advanced sport and exercise nutrition, laboratory techniques in sport and exercise nutrition, quantitative research, and a research project.

Assessment

Examination, coursework and a research paper.

Entry qualification

An upper second class (2:1) honours degree in nutrition, dietetics, physiology, sports science with a strong biological sciences component, or a related subject.

Careers and further study

Typical destinations include teaching in higher education, athlete support within the English Institute of Sport, and PhD research.
