Overview

Our Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status programme prepares you to teach the 11-18 age range and is offered as a full-time, one year programme. It provides practical professional preparation for teaching in secondary schools, and is designed and delivered in partnership with schools in up to 10 Local Authorities.

The PGCE represents both a standalone qualification and the first year (contributing half the credits) of an MSc in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). This therefore provides an opportunity for you to gain a relevant master’s degree during your early teaching career.

On completion of the 36-week long PGCE in Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status element of the MSc in Education, successful graduates will be qualified to teach children aged 11-18. This course is taught through the outstanding School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences at Loughborough University.

Following the successful completion of a research methods course and a school-based research project, successful graduates will be qualified to masters’ level which, in addition to their Loughborough PGCE, will position them strongly in the broad field of physical education teacher.

You will have access to both the University’s outstanding sports facilities for the taught element of the course and a partnership of more than 40 schools in the region for the school-based element of the course. 

The structure of the MSc in Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) Physical Education has been uniquely designed to allow you to gain QTS and complete your masters degree by the end of your second year of teaching, at the same time as keeping your first year of teaching (Newly Qualified Teacher year) free from any academic commitments.

The first year of the degree is the PGCE (90 credits), at the end of which if you are eligible and you decide to continue with your masters study you can enroll onto the Research into Teaching and Learning module. This module is worth 30 credits and is completed prior to you starting their NQT year.

Following your NQT year you will enroll onto the final module: the Teaching Physical Education Research Project. This is a distance learning module and involves one to one supervision with researchers of international renown. Importantly this project module offers you the opportunity to continue your professional development by conducting research on a pedagogical innovation and development in the context of teaching physical education relevant to your work context. This module is worth 60 credits and completes the 180 credits required for the award of the MSc in Education with QTS Physical Education.

Entry requirements

An honours degree (2:1 or above), awarded by a UK higher education provider, or a recognised equivalent qualification.

English Language Requirements

All applicants for admission to Loughborough University must have a qualification in English Language before they can be admitted to any course or programme, whether their first language is English or not.

IELTS: 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in all elements.

What you'll study

Our Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status programme is designed to produce well-qualified subject-specialist teachers for secondary schools, who engage in critical reflective practice to further develop their teaching and enhance pupil learning.

Modules

Physical Education with Qualified Teacher Status programme covers a wide range of topics; to give you a taster we have expanded on some of the core modules affiliated with this programme and the specific assessment methods associated with each module.

Semester 1

Professional Studies 1 (PE)

This module helps students to develop comprehensive subject knowledge, understanding and skills required of a specialist teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school. Drawing on both practical and theoretical session students are challenged to develop critical awareness of contemporary subject issues and new insights.

Assessment: The module is assessed through two written assignments each weighted at 50%.

Practical Teaching 1 (PE)

This module introduces students to the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school. This module is school based.

Assessment is based on classroom performance, as observed and monitored by the trained ITT Co-ordinator, Subject Mentor and colleagues, and agreed by a Visiting Tutor from the University, evaluated in terms of a standard schedule based on criteria associated with meeting the Teachers' Standards.

General Professional Studies (Semester 1 & 2)

This module helps students to gain a systematic understanding of the wider professional requirements of teachers in secondary schools. It challenges them to (a) develop critical awareness of contemporary whole school issues informed by professional practice; (b) critically appraise policy and research related to the wider professional development of new teachers; and (b) address the requirements of the Teachers' Standards (Department for Education, 2011).

Assessment: The module is assessed through a report (40%) and a reflective essay (60%).

Teaching Physical Education Research Project (Semester 1 & 2)

This module provides students with the opportunity to critically reflect on current pedagogical developments in secondary Physical Education and assess personal professional development needs in relation to these. Students will be asked to critically and constructively interrogate their own and/or others' practice in teaching secondary Physical Education and will be afforded the chance to gain experience of designing and carrying out a small-scale research investigation.

Assessment: The module is assessed through two written assignments weighted at 20% and 80% respectively, but the university reserves the right to alter this.

Semester 2

Professional Studies 2 (PE)

This module builds on PSP901 and helps students to continue to develop comprehensive subject knowledge, understanding and skills required of a specialist teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school. Drawing on both practical and theoretical session students are challenged to develop critical awareness of contemporary subject issues and new insights.

Assessment: The module is assessed through a written assignment weighted at 100%.

Practical Teaching 2 (PE)

This module allows students to develop the teaching skills necessary to qualify as a specialist teacher of Physical Education in a secondary school. This module is school based.

Assessment is based on classroom performance, as observed and monitored by the trained ITT Co-ordinator, Subject Mentor and colleagues, and agreed by a Visiting Tutor from the University, evaluated in terms of a standard schedule based on criteria associated with meeting the Teachers' Standards.

Research into Teaching and Learning (Compulsory for MSc in Education students)

This module provides students with opportunity to gain a critical understanding and appreciation of the philosophical, ethical and stakeholder issues associated with school-based research.

Assessment: The module is assessed through a group presentation (30%) and a research proposal (70%).
