Applied Sport Placement Opportunities – collaboration with SDC and SSEHS

There is an opportunity for eight SSEHS students who will complete part B in 2016/17 to undertake a placement year supporting sport at the University. These placement opportunities are voluntary; however the University will provide the students with a stipend of £6000 as a contribution towards living expenses. In addition, investment will be made in personal development.

Each placement student will work closely with staff to support sport and to learn about the academic underpinning of this activity and to contribute to exciting research in the area.

Interested applicants should provide a CV plus a covering letter for each placement that they are interested in to ssehs-ops@lboro.ac.uk.  As part of the covering letter, applicants are asked to outline a potential research project that they could undertake with the data that could be collected.

Please note these roles will require a commitment of at least 30 hours per week, with the requirement to attend out of hours and in weekends.

Opportunities

Coaching and Performance Analysis placement: Loughborough University/Leicester Riders Basketball

We have a fantastic opportunity for a placement student to support the coaching of our Loughborough University Basketball teams. Working in partnership with Leicester Riders, we compete in both National Leagues and at the very top of BUCS. The placement will be fully immersed in all aspects of Loughborough and Riders Basketball and get very real, hands on experience across a range of disciplines and scenarios.  This post will also contribute to research in collecting performance data about the team and doing coach behaviour analysis.

Performance Analysis placements x 3 (Rugby, Hockey, Football)

One role exists in each our Rugby, Football and Hockey teams which compete at National League level and at the top of the BUCS pyramid. Working with our coaching and other support staff, the placement will be a full part of the Multi-Disciplinary team working to support each of these sports. Filming, coding and feeding back to coaching and other staff will be a core part of the role but there will be opportunities to be more widely involved as the interest of the placement student dictates.  The person will collect data about the team, unit and individual in order to provide reports and feedback to individual players and coaches.  This data will contribute to research in this area.

Rugby (Women’s) Operations Management placement

Loughborough has been awarded a place in the new Super Rugby competition (the very top flight of women’s rugby in the UK) starting in September. This placement, perhaps suitable for someone looking to move on to operations or performance management roles in sport, will be intimately involved in the management and logistics needed to field a top flight team. There will be direct mentoring support from experienced operations managers and other staff as well as academic experts.  The data collected will contribute to research.

Sport Science (primarily Physiology/Nutrition) Rugby (Men’s) placement

Our Men’s Rugby team competes in National League 1 and has an extensive programme of competitive fixtures as well as reaching the final of BUCS for 2 out of the last 3 seasons. A placement opportunity exists for an individual to become a full part of the Multi-Disciplinary team of coaches and other support staff, primarily providing delivery in the disciplines of Physiology and Nutrition but with huge opportunity to be involved more broadly across the Sport Sciences.  Will contribute to research around team preparation and recovery strategy.

Strength and Conditioning

This is an opportunity for an aspiring Strength and Conditioning Coach to join our team of professional S&C Coaches. The successful applicant will gain practical coaching experience under the guidance of experienced coaches, and will be supported through the UKSCA Accreditation process. During the year, there is an opportunity to build up a portfolio of CPD and practical expertise, enhancing your employability within S&C. Placement coaches will be challenged through working with a variety of team and individual sports and events to enable a rounded program of understanding to take place.

Applied Sports Science

This is an opportunity for an aspiring Sports Scientist/Physiologist to join our team of Sports Science professionals in delivering physiological support to our Performance Sports. The successful applicant will gain practical, applied experience under the guidance of experienced practitioners and will be supported through an individualized personal development plan for applied practice. During the year, there is an opportunity to build up a portfolio of Continued Professional Development (CPD) and practical expertise, enhancing your employability within sports science and performance. The role will involve the following:

-       Supporting Lead Sports Scientist in development of the provision of sports science practice to specific sports at Loughborough University to include Athletics, Triathlon and Swimming

-       Assist with tasks such as performance testing, training load monitoring, environmental physiology projects, seasonal planning and periodization, and athlete education
