Financialization and Social Stratification in the Art World: An Ethnographic Study of Independent Artists’ Pathways and Barriers

Supervisors : Dr. Kathryn Brown Dr. Richard Bramwell

The research explores how systemic structures—such as cultural policy, institutional gatekeeping, and class-based inequalities—shape the survival strategies and recognition pathways of independent artists in the UK. Particularly how these artists navigate the contradictions between artistic autonomy and market demands, especially under conditions of economic uncertainty and structural exclusion.
