Cost of living as a Loughborough student.

We know this is a worrying time for lots of people who are heading to university this year, but we are here to help.

We have put together some key information that will help students when it comes to paying for university life, and an increased cost of living.

What is Loughborough doing?

There are a number of ways Loughborough is helping students with the cost of living, including:

Free weekly sports and activities bookable through the MyLifestyle app ranging from UV Zumba, football, wheelchair basketball, yoga and more.
Free 24/7 access to our IT Labs and Microsoft Office 365
Utility costs, cleaning services, internet and contents insurance are all included in your accommodation fees, with no caps on usage or increases.
Prospective students can get appointments with student services to discuss budgeting. If you would like to book a session to help you plan your budget for university you just need to phone +44(0)1509 222765

What can I do?

There are a number of steps you can take yourself when it comes to money management! Here are just a few:

Take advantage of student discounts

There are a number of ways you can save money when you spend as a student! Studentbeans and UniDays are 2 of the biggest student discount websites around, and they offer lots of codes for you to save money on everything from a new pair of trainers to your weekly shop (unless you've decided to go catered). Make sure you sign up as soon as you get your IT credentials so you can make the most of your savings.

Make (and stick to!) a budget

We know it sounds daunting, but making a budget doesn't have to involve a tonne of work, you just need to make sure you're bringing in more than you're spending. Not sure where to start? In the video below, our student ambassador, Jemima, talks through what she spends in a week as a Loughborough student.

Consider going catered

It can be really overwhelming trying to stay on top of bills and living costs and you don't want to end up living off baked beans once your student loan has all gone. At Loughborough we offer some fantastic catered halls of residence, and did you know a standard catered room in the village (39 week let) is approximately the same price as a self-catered en-suite room (41 week let). That's a years worth of meals for the substitute of an en-suite, and you won't have to worry about keeping money aside for the food shop! In our video below, our students talk about the reasons they're glad they went catered.

Boost your income

There are a number of part-time jobs available in and around Loughborough town, including at our Students’ Union. Jobs at LSU include bar, security and catering roles, and we even have our own student ambassador scheme where you will be paid to help the University in our marketing activities (such as creating blogs and vlogs) and help out at our open days. If you are interested in a part-time job, make sure you keep an eye on job boards such as indeed. You'll be able to find out more about becoming a student ambassador when you arrive on campus in freshers week.
