Who are Loughborough University?

Loughborough is one of the largest engineering universities in the UK offering courses from its foundation in 1909. With fantastic facilities, strong links to industry and the best student experience spanning the last 10 years, we are thrilled to be running our engineering residential, Engineering Experience, aimed at helping Year 11 students experience what Loughborough University and an engineering career have to offer.

What is Engineering Experience?

Engineering Experience is an on-campus event where successful applicants take part in practical Engineering workshops and industry talks. Each session will be run by our academics or an expert in industry and students are encouraged to pick subjects that they may not have considered before.

The event will include:

  • Workshops delivered by our academics, researchers and expert alumni in industry 
  • Content to help you explore different types of engineering and the careers they provide
  • Content to help you explore the different courses on offer at one of the largest engineering universities in the UK
  • Opportunities to ask current students any questions about student life and living at Loughborough University.

Subject overviews

Chemical Engineering 

Chemical Engineers are at the forefront of important scientific and technological developments that are all about turning raw materials into everyday products. The food and drink we consume, the energy we use, and the medicines we take, all depend on technical know-how and ingenuity of chemical engineers. Our graduates oversee the safe manufacture of these products, all whilst managing resources and protecting the environment. Chemical engineers are also driving a sustainable revolution, researching and innovating in areas such as green energy.  

Materials Engineering 

Materials Engineering underpins global industry and stands at the center of many technological breakthroughs in recent history. It examines how things are made and how they can be improved. From materials working in harmony with the human body, such as implants and replacement joints, to the development of greener and more sustainable materials for energy, materials as a subject touches on all aspects of our lives, making it one of the most important and rewarding sectors of engineering.  

Bioengineering 

Bioengineering bridges the gap between engineering and medicine for the enhancement of human health. It is the application of engineering to biological and healthcare challenges. The field is rapidly developing, and bioengineers work in a wide variety of sectors globally, developing products and creating technology to help people achieve a better quality of life and break barriers in medical and sporting achievements. 

Civil Engineering 

Civil engineers create and connect the world around us while tackling some of the greatest challenges in contemporary society. They use new digital practices and sustainable solutions in order to transform our buildings and infrastructure worldwide, from bridges and railways to skyscrapers and sports stadia. 

Architectural Engineering 

Combining the creativity of architecture with the rigour of engineering, architectural engineers play a key role in the production of a sustainable built environment. They oversee the whole building process, from concept to construction, combining architecture, environmental design and structural engineering to deliver iconic, resilient and sustainable buildings. 

Urban Planning 

Cities around the world are threatened by climate change, rising sea levels, population growth and economic change. Urban planners have the ability to shape our world by changing how our cities are planned and developed to tackle these economic, social and environmental challenges, making our cities more sustainable, healthy and safe. 

Mechanical Engineering 

Mechanical engineering applies the principles of physics and engineering science to the analysis, design, development and maintenance of mechanical systems, defining how and why they work. Covering an extensive range of disciplines from dynamics and control, to stress analysis and thermodynamics, mechanical engineers are at the heart of a broad spectrum of global industrial sectors, ranging from heart stents to bullet trains. 

Manufacturing and Product Design Engineering 

Manufacturing and Product Design Engineering are two disciplines responsible for turning raw materials into new products, and then developing functional products to the correct specification, in the right quantity, as efficiently as possible, anywhere in the world. Through researching and developing new manufacturing processes, machines and equipment, product design engineers and manufacturing engineers turn ideas into reality. They are fundamental to global market success and require not only aesthetics and customer appeal, but also fitness for purpose, correct functionality and superior quality at a competitive price.  

Electrical Engineering

A modern integrated electrical circuit may contain several billion miniaturised transistors in a few square centimetres and is capable of doing the most extraordinary things. So, whether it’s mobile phones and computing, household gadgets, healthcare equipment, automotive and aerospace technology, renewables and transport infrastructure, defence or utility provision, Electronic and Electrical Engineering is integral to and embedded in the smooth functioning of our everyday lives and it is impossible to imagine a world without it.
