Research and teaching

We lead in technological research and innovation, with extensive national and international collaborations with industry. The breadth of our research activity is captured in our themes, which are served with research activities from our research groups and a number of leading-edge research centres and institutes hosted by the School.

We develop and nurture the world’s top engineering talent. All our programmes are research-led and taught by world-leading academics to ensure you have the most up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge required to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world. We work closely with industry, with industry experts delivering guest lectures.  We integrate their requirements, as well as our own cutting-edge research, into our informed modules and projects, allowing you to extend the boundaries of current knowledge.

As part of your master’s, you will be required to undertake a major research project, which will be supervised by one of our specialist academics, giving you the opportunity to deepen your studies in your chosen field. Whilst you can choose your own topic, there may be the opportunity to undertake a project based on an academic’s research or industrial projects.

Throughout your time at Loughborough, you will be supported by a network of personal, subject and project tutors. They will guide you through your choice of course electives, where applicable, so you can tailor your degree to your interests and requirements. Additionally, our laboratory facilities are managed by highly experienced technical staff, who will work closely with you to develop and realise your potential.

Links with industry

With the aim to bridge the gap between academia and industry, a key part of our ethos is our extensive links with industry across multiple sectors. We deliver real impact through our partnerships, with the likes of Adidas, Airbus, Caterpillar, Ford and Rolls-Royce, and our internationally recognised research helps drive forward innovation and technology, adding wide-ranging value to our partners. These links include the master’s Level 7 Apprenticeship in Systems Engineering, in which students must demonstrate their developing skills and knowledge directly in the workplace.

Facilities

The University recently invested over £70 million into developing the west side of campus, where the School is based. We have improved our high-tech teaching facilities, laboratories, and workshops to ensure you have access to specialist equipment and industry standard hardware and software, allowing you to enter industry or further your academic study with the latest ideas and concepts.

The Wolfson School has 15,750m2 of facilities which cater for various research areas including, additive manufacturing, automation, dynamics and control, electrical power generation, engineering design, engineering management, fluid mechanics, healthcare engineering, intelligent transport, internal combustion engines, manufacturing, materials, mechatronics, metrology, optical engineering, product design, radio communications, renewable energy and energy storage, robotics, sports technology, structural integrity, systems and thermodynamics.

Accreditation

Teaching and research are shaped by industry and partner feedback, which ensures our graduates are well prepared for a successful career in engineering and research. Our programmes have been accredited for several years, some as far back as 2003. Each course is accredited by at least one of the following institutions: Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) and Institution of Engineering Designers (IED).

Career opportunities

Our programmes are designed to provide you with a balance of technical knowledge and experience of the latest software and hardware, as well as transferable skills such as organisation, problem-solving, communication and leadership. Whilst some graduates opt to continue their studies though a PhD, recent graduates have gone on to work for a range of organisations in a variety of sectors including Accenture, Aston Martin Lagonda, BAE Systems, Caterpillar, Cummins, Huawei, Jaguar Land Rover, Mitsubishi, Rolls-Royce, Siemens and Tata Steel, to name a few.

Our award-winning careers team are available to support you throughout your studies and up to three years post graduate. They can assist you with various aspects of securing your graduate role, including creating and polishing your CV, job applications, mock interviews and enterprise and business support.
