Project details
The construction industry is a major contributor to global carbon emissions, with material transportation and shipping representing a significant yet under-optimised source of environmental impact. Construction material shipping decisions—such as delivery timing, shipment size, transport mode, and routing—are often made using static rules or experience-based heuristics, which struggle to respond effectively to dynamic site conditions, uncertain demand, and evolving sustainability targets. This project proposes a reinforcement learning (RL)–driven framework to optimise low-carbon shipping strategies for construction materials under real-world uncertainty.
The research will develop a decision-making model in which an RL agent learns optimal shipping policies by interacting with a simulated construction logistics environment. The environment will represent key operational and sustainability factors, including material demand variability, delivery lead times, vehicle capacity, on-site storage constraints, and carbon emissions associated with different transport choices. Through trial-and-error learning, the RL agent will aim to minimise a multi-objective cost function that balances carbon emissions, transportation cost, delivery reliability, and site operability.
A core contribution of the project lies in embedding carbon-aware reward functions that explicitly penalise high-emission shipping decisions while encouraging consolidation, just-in-time delivery, and low-carbon transport modes where feasible. The model will be tested across multiple construction scenarios to evaluate its adaptability and robustness compared with conventional logistics strategies. Where appropriate, the framework may be integrated with a digital twin of construction logistics to support scenario analysis and decision support.
The expected outcomes include a validated RL-based optimisation framework for sustainable construction material shipping, quantitative insights into carbon reduction potential, and practical guidance for contractors and logistics planners. This research aims to contribute to both the academic literature on intelligent construction logistics and the industry’s transition toward net-zero construction practices.

Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, February 2027 and July 2027. UK tuition fees for 2026/27 are currently to be confirmed pending the release of the UKRI recommended rates. Once published, these rates will be subject to formal approval by the University before being confirmed.
The studentship is for three years and provides a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees. Funding for this studentship is awarded on a competitive basis and is not guaranteed; availability will depend on the outcome of the selection process and is subject to final approval by the university.

All applications must be made online and must include a completed studentship application form (instead of a personal statement) and a 2-3 page research proposal based on the project description outlining how you would approach the project and what methods you would use. Under programme name, please select ‘Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering (Built Environment)’. Please quote reference number ABCE26-LH.
