Project details
Healthcare estates represent critical public infrastructure, yet many facilities operate below optimal efficiency while facing increasing demands and constrained budgets. Artificial intelligence (AI) offers transformative potential for how we manage, maintain and optimise these essential building assets – but current approaches remain fragmented and reactive. Your research with us would place you at the forefront of this rapidly emerging field, developing next-generation AI systems for critical infrastructure management.
Our project aims to develop and validate AI-agentic systems that can autonomously monitor, reason about and optimise the performance of healthcare buildings. This research will make a meaningful contribution to both the sustainability and operational resilience of critical infrastructure.
You will have access to unique real-world datasets captured from NHS healthcare facilities. Supported by our established NHS collaborations, your research will address genuine operational challenges facing the UK's healthcare estate. Whether you focus on multi-agent coordination for building systems, lightweight AI for edge deployment or digital twin integration for predictive maintenance, what you develop will make a real difference to how we manage critical healthcare infrastructure.
The research will explore multi-agent AI architectures for facility management, investigating how autonomous agents can coordinate decisions across building systems including HVAC, energy and maintenance scheduling. The project will employ digital twin methodologies, machine learning techniques and agent-based simulation to create systems that can predict failures, optimise energy consumption and support evidence-based asset management decisions. Supported by our internationally recognised Construction Management and Building Energy research groups, you will have access to world-class expertise and facilities to ensure your research achieves real-world impact.

Entry requirements for United Kingdom
Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject. A relevant master's degree and/or experience is desirable. The ideal candidate will have a background in computer science, data science, building services engineering or construction management, with programming experience in Python and an interest in artificial intelligence or building performance optimisation. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, building management systems or digital twin technologies would be advantageous but not essential.

Fees for the 2026-27 academic year apply to projects starting in October 2026, February 2027 and July 2027. UK tuition fees for 2026/27 are currently to be confirmed pending the release of the UKRI recommended rates. Once published, these rates will be subject to formal approval by the University before being confirmed.
Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.
The studentship is for three years and provides a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees. Funding for this studentship is awarded on a competitive basis and is not guaranteed; availability will depend on the outcome of the selection process and is subject to final approval by the university.

All applications must be made online and must include a completed studentship application form (instead of a personal statement) and a 2-3 page research proposal based on the project description outlining how you would approach the project and what methods you would use.
