Council Tax for Bachelor’s and Master’s students

If you have registered onto a full-time Bachelor’s or Master’s programme you are considered to be a student for council tax purposes from the course start date until the course end date, or earlier if you abandon it or are required to leave, this includes:

    • any vacations and periods of non-attendance with leave of absence.
    • if you are taking a work placement as part of your programme

Proving my status as a student

Every year Loughborough University provides Charnwood Borough Council with a list of Bachelor’s and Master’s students who have registered for the current academic year and who have provided the University with a term-time address.  It is important to ensure that your term-time address is kept up to date on the Student Self-service portal, so the correct details can be provided.

Your local council may ask you to prove your student status, whether you live in Loughborough, London or elsewhere (e.g. if you are on placement).  You can download a ‘Council Tax letter’ from the Student Self-service portal for this purpose.

If you are a Loughborough London student a ‘Council Tax letter’ can be requested in person from the Student Services Desk at the London campus, or by email to: london-enquiries@lboro.ac.uk

What if I receive a bill from the Council?

Do not ignore a council tax bill if you receive one, as you can be taken to court for non-payment and you can incur further costs.

It is important to contact the council and provide any information that is requested. If you need to provide evidence of your student status see above ('Proving my status as a student') for information on how you can do this.  If you are liable, you will need to make arrangements to pay.

How can the University support you?

If you receive a council tax bill and need further guidance the Student Advice and Support Service can:

    • offer advice
    • help you contact the relevant council
    • make representations on your behalf.

You can book an appointment at the Student Advice and Support Service through the online appointment request form, by emailing advice@lboro.ac.uk or calling 01509 222765
