Deaf Awareness & Working with Deaf Students
Description of activity: 1 in 6 people in the UK have a hearing loss, so the chances are you are communicating with someone who has a hearing loss every day, both during the working day and beyond. This course will teach you the golden rules of communicating with Deaf/ hard of hearing people. You will also learn about appropriate language, effective communication tactics and specialist equipment whilst dispelling some of the common myths about deaf people, their language and their culture.

Disability Confidence
Disability Confidence
Description of activity: 1 in 8 of the University population is registered with the Disability Office or Mental Health Support Team, and as the law also protects disabled people its important that we are all "disability confident".
This 2 hour workshop will look at what is a 'disability' and how it is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act. We will also examine the language we use around disability, and some basic principles of disability etiquette. The course aims to increase your confidence around disability through active participation in a variety of learning activities.

Suicide Prevention
Suicide Prevention
Description of activity: Suicide prevention skills programme developed by the Student Wellbeing and Inclusivity service. A 3 hour programme to provide education and skills to help reduce the risk of suicide.

Working effectively with Students in distress
Working effectively with Students in distress
Description of activity: Responding effectively to students who present to staff in distress can be a daunting prospect.
This practical 3 hour workshop will examine the physiological response to stress and the implications this has for responding effectively. There will also be an opportunity to understand and practice the elements of effective listening, think about appropriate referrals and discuss the limits of the helping role.
