Routes of Engagement

Individual or business

Is the provider you have in mind to deliver your service an individual or business?

Please answer this question with reference to the individual working arrangement.

If you do not already have a provider in mind, please select the type of provider you expect to receive applications from.

If the person is trading through their own company or you are contracting with another organisation to deliver a service, then you are engaging a business. In these cases, the University has a contract with the business, not with the individual delivering the work.

If you are not sure whether someone is acting as an individual or through a business, check how they present themselves. If the contract or invoice is in the name of a company, it is a business. If it is in the person’s own name, they are acting as an individual.

Individual

An individual is a person working in their own name, not through a separate company. If you are paying a person directly for their time, skills or effort, they should usually be treated as an individual.

Business

A business is a separate legal entity. This could be:

  • A limited company (e.g. “ABC Ltd”).
  • A partnership.
  • Another organisation or supplier registered with Companies House or HMRC.
