With contributions from Professors Tom Jackson (LBS), Ian Hodgkinson (LBS), Graham Hitchen (Policy Unit), Dr Nicola Paine (SSEHS), and members of the DDDG strategic advisory group, this event demonstrated the importance of Loughborough’s digital decarbonisation research programme and its collaborative approaches to reducing the environmental impact of digital systems such as AI. In the briefing, attendees heard how behaviour change strategies will be critical to fostering reductions in carbon emissions, to optimise and utilise existing technologies to their full capacity.
The session focused on sharing evidence-based insights into the scale of digital-related emissions and the challenges organisations face in delivering digital transformation alongside sustainability goals. Showcasing Loughborough’s pioneering digital decarb research cluster Dr Nicola Paine emphasised the role of behaviour change strategies and outlined practical steps organisations can take to minimise their digital carbon footprint. Industry leaders contributed perspectives on real-world barriers and opportunities, fostering constructive dialogue between policymakers, academia and practice.
