Pupils enjoy taster day in Chemistry labs

A group of pupils enjoyed delving into the world of Chemistry at Loughborough University last week during a visit to the multi-million pound STEMLab facility.

The 13 talented pupils from JCB Academy in Uttoxeter learned about fluorescence spectroscopy, made a luminous firefly-like liquid and got to grips with culturing cells for lab testing.

The visit was both fun and educational for the pupils, who are in Years 10 and 11, as they got first-hand experience in state-of-the-art laboratories, thanks to the help of our expert technical staff including Jadeen Christie, Sweta Ladwa and David Belcher.

Dr Paul Roach, who organised the day with support from the fantastic Schools and College Liaison team at Loughborough University, hailed the day a success and commented that the pupils and teachers that accompanied them really enjoyed their day.

Are you a teacher? Thinking that this would be a great experience for your pupils? Discuss the opportunities for taster days in all our Science subjects by emailing scl@lboro.ac.uk.

We also have a STEM Inspiring Minds taster day that runs yearly.
