Loughborough University in collaboration with Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted a workshop on 2nd March 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to explore the concept of Graphic Heritage associated with places named after Nelson Mandela.

The workshop, Exploring Madiba’s Graphic Heritage, shared new insights from the Memorialising Mandela in the Metropolis project at Loughborough University that synthesises the relationship between toponymy, graphic images, digital design, cultural heritage, and place-making in locations named after Madiba. Perspectives from academia, Nelson Mandela Foundation, creative industries, and delegate participation were shared in the context of research undertaken in South Africa, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.

The workshop is part of a United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) GCRF/Newton Fund Consolidation project led by Dr Robert Harland, Reader in Urban Graphic Heritage, and Dr Yolandi Burger, Research Fellow from the School of Design and Creative Arts at Loughborough University, alongside Dr Everardt Burger, Lecturer from the Department of Civil Engineering at Tshwane University of Technology.

Speaking of the partnership, Dr Robert Harland says:

"Through graphic heritage we were able to bring together the expertise of archive specialists at Nelson Mandela Foundation, heritage practitioners, intellectual property and copyright professionals, documentarians, photographers, urban planners, digital designers, and graphic designers, to discuss the stewardship of Nelson Mandela's legacy through the multitude of graphic images that represent him and communicate his values."

A workshop information pack is available on the Loughborough University Repository.
