3-Dimensional Design Specialism

For this project I wanted to explore how consumerism and throw away culture had partly caused our current plastic pollution problem.

The post war generation became more prosperous and generally had more disposable income. Many consumers were willing to spend money on luxury items such as washing machines, tumble dryers and microwaves. These products created a more convenient and desirable lifestyle which led to a great demand for this style of product.

Once thermo-plastics became available for use in industry, companies quickly began using plastics in many contexts due to their ability to be moulded into any shape and rapid cost-effective manufacturing times. However, the wide availability of plastic products has created a huge plastic waste problem which is polluting our environment.

The chair is made from a deconstructed, broken tumble dryer, using the polypropylene components.
