Fine Art Specialism

I began to research into plastics that are used within the food industry to preserve food; reading into essays written in the Emirates Journal of Food and Agriculture. To fit this concept into contemporary fine art I flipped the narrative and used digital photography to present human flesh wrapped in cling film rather than food. This provided a sinister yet also comical element to my commentary. The photograph was also taken within the backdrop of a bathroom with human legs wrapped in cling film emerging from the bath, which commends a sense of enigma as well as horror. The photography was heavily inspired by Digital photographer Gregory Crewdson through creating a dark atmosphere within a familiar setting as well as photographer Joel Peter-Witkin through his display of sinister yet also beautiful images in order to advocate a sense of change. Through this added element of memento mori as well as the use of colour, the piece provides similarity to Jacques-Louis David’s, 1793 painting Death of Marat.
