Profile

Sophie Goodchild (b.1993, Chester) is an artist based in Nottingham. She is a graduate of the Royal College of Art (MA Painting, 2021) and a graduate of the alternative art school, School of The Damned (MFA, 2019). She is currently Artist in Residence at Loughborough University (2024) as part of the AA2A award programme.

Her making is embedded in the roots of materiality and the tactile: Saturation and Sensation as Translation. Embellishment- as screens- as cracks. The primary medium of Wool is tidal in structure, embodying natural peaks and valleys in both fibre and layers combined, presenting an entanglement of order and rhythm. Structures take centre stage within both the painterly and sculptural: craft, repetition, trust and territory present themselves in the fusing and preserving act of making.

Recent solo shows include: The Sand in The Pearl, Trafalgar Avenue, London, supported by The Eaton Fund and Oppenheim John Downes Memorial Trust. Recent group exhibitions: MATTER, Flowers Gallery (2023), Full to Bursting, Staffordshire Street, London (2023), Who Holds the Sword? Hypha Studios, London (2023) Within Reach, Sid Motion Gallery, London (2022), The Amber Room, Reference Point Library, London (2022), Saxifrage, Kupfer Project, London (2022) and Sticking Ground, One Thoresby Street, Nottingham (2022).
