Dr Navjot Kaur

PhD in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University (UK)
MEng in Computer Science and Engineering (INDIA)
BEng in Electronics and Communication Engineering (INDIA)

Pronouns: She/her
  • Research Associate in Human Computer Interaction

Navjot completed her PhD from Loughborough University in 2012 and continued working as a Researcher till 2016. She has extensive experience of working on industry based projects including collaboration with well-established organisations like FORD Motor Company, Jaguar Land Rover and Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC). She has academic background in multidisciplinary areas with BEng in Electronics and Communication engineering and MEng in Computer Science and Engineering.

Her primary interests involve big health data manipulation and management, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data visualisation and human computer interaction. As a Data Scientist at Leicester Real World Evidence Unit (LRWE), Navjot has gained experience in cleaning, manipulation and management of big health data.

In her current role, she is mainly involved in research in the area of machine learning application for patients with intellectual disabilities (ID) and multimorbidity. She has played an essential role in research grant proposal for NIHR research project (DECODE: Mapping the Challenges and Requirements for Data-Driven, Machine Learning aided Stratification and Management of Multiple Long-Term Conditions in Adults with Intellectual Disabilities) in collaboration with Loughborough University and University of Leicester. She has acquired a position in the same project and will be focussing on the DECODE user interface design which will allow health care professionals to view, understand and interrogate various types of clinical data and decisions made by AI algorithms about the presence of multiple long term conditions in patients with ID.

As an experienced professional, Navjot has worked in a combination of areas in the field of Electronics, Computer Science, Data Science, Information Technology and Manufacturing Automation. Her PhD research work involved implementation of Embedded Systems Design and Component Based Manufacturing Automation using Service Oriented Architectures, at Loughborough University, UK in collaboration with Ford Motor Company, UK and Schneider Electric, France. After completing PhD, Navjot has worked on EPSRC project INTELLICO in the field of RF antenna design and EM simulations. It involved implementation of RFID tag based system for tracking, traceability and quality assurance of automotive assets in FORD’s engine assembly plant. She has also designed a novel logo based metal mountable UHF antenna. This antenna prototype on different substrates has been successfully tested in FORD’s engine assembly plant and harsh environment. She has worked on a research project for implementation of RFID based tracking system and smart energy monitoring in Jaguar Land Rover’s assembly plant. Her research work has been presented and published on International level (IEEE conferences and peer reviewed journals).

As a Data Scientist, Navjot has experience in big health data extraction, cleaning and manipulation using Python so as to establish tailored methods for handling and analysing data efficiently. Her main research work is to find more efficient ways to manage and clean large (>1 million participants) data sets and explore potential use of machine learning and artificial intelligence methods for analysis of prediction models. She has worked in various health related research projects involving patients with Type 2 Diabetes, COVID-19 and multiple long term conditions (MLTCs) and intellectual disability (ID). As a health data expert, Navjot has been actively involved in partnership development and organising stakeholder workshops with different types of users e.g. Data Scientist, Epidemiologists, Nurses, Carers and Social workers. Navjot has also played an essential role in NIHR DECODE Development grant which involved exploring AI and ML methods to untangle the relationships of multiple long term conditions in people with ID.
