Curator Comment by Risa TOKUHASHI about “Baby’s room” by Yui GAMO

The reason Yui GAMO painted this work was because she wanted to paint a cat at her parents' house.

For her, she wanted to convey that nurturing connections is more important than blood ties by drawing two cats unrelated by blood and a human baby of a different race. She said the baby was painted from imagination. She said that she carefully observed and drew the cat at her parents' house in order to bring reality to this work. She said she would be happy if she could cherish chance encounters in her life, just like the encounter of the two cats and the baby.

For her, "connection" is born from an encounter even if she doesn't understand the language or don’t have the same things in common, and she thinks it is important to find a way to connect.

Perhaps this encounter, which is still only a point, is the starting point of a connection because in every relationship there is always a first meeting.

Curator Comment by Risa TOKUHASHI about “Light” by Joanna CRONK

Her work clearly expresses the theme of "connections."

Joanna CRONK’s work uses a black and white light bulb to describe the word connection. The composition has a large light bulb lying on its side. The filament of the light bulb depicted in her work is represented by a wire, and the shadow made by the wire is also used. The light bulb is drawn on one side, which is why we pay attention to the wire that is bent like a screw.

Because it is a work expressed in black and white, it results in a retro and refined fashionable postcard design. She majors in textiles and this work was made as a basic fashion exercise. In Japan, retro culture is currently attracting attention, and calm monotone colors and goods that make you feel nostalgic are now popular among young people. I feel that this work is a design that allows you to feel the culture of the good old days such as a nostalgic black-and-white movie.
