Curator Comment by Shulei GUO about “Hugs” by Yuko KANDA

Two cats are sitting closely together. It can be imagined that this is winter.

Cats are very cold and in winter, they prefer warm places near the stove and try to warm themselves with human heat by snuggling close to humans or on their knees. The two cats seem to have fallen asleep while snuggling up to each other for warmth. Since the scene is bright, they seem to have fallen asleep comfortably in a sunny room.

I wonder if the artist was reading a book in the same room with a cup of coffee when she noticed the cats lying there. Bathed in the warm afternoon sunlight, I felt a sense of love and warmth for the cats, who were snuggling and sleeping with an air of security. I feel as if the artist's gaze is poured directly into the work.

The whole picture is very quiet and warm. Seeing this picture, unconsciously I become calm. I just want to feel peace. The quiet warmth brings people together, not to mention animals.

Curator Comment by Shulei GUO about “The Seventies are Back” by Shellie SEYMOUR

In the early 1970s, the European economy was in a slump, and extravagant clothing was no longer the mainstream. Gradually, more diversified styles emerged. At that time, the silhouette of clothing changed from close fitting to neutral and minimalist. Hippy was the most representative pop culture. Hippy culture originated from London street culture. Graffiti, jazz, rock, music, freedom and so on are the inspiration sources of the style. Stain resistant and wear-resistant jeans are representative of hippie style. This work of art brings me back to the 1970s.
