Sustainable development, economic growth and finance

We’re examining how financial systems, markets and policy frameworks can drive sustainable and inclusive economic growth across regions and sectors.

This theme explores the connections between finance, economic resilience and environmental sustainability, focusing on how fiscal and monetary policy, green finance and responsible investment can support long-term prosperity.

Our academics are investigating topics such as climate risk, gender-diverse financial leadership, corporate financial strategy and the measurement of social welfare beyond GDP. Researchers are analysing how crises, volatility and institutional change shape growth trajectories and policy outcomes, particularly in developing and emerging economies.

Collaboration across economics, finance, management and international business ensures that insights extend beyond theory to influence organisational practice and public policy. This research informs the design of financial systems that are more inclusive and responsive to global challenges, from climate change and inequality to digital transformation in finance.

Research questions examined within this theme include:

  • How can fiscal and monetary policy promote sustainable economic growth while maintaining financial stability?
  • What role do financial institutions play in supporting the transition to greener, more resilient economies?
  • How do gender and diversity in financial leadership influence investment decisions and corporate sustainability?
  • In what ways can developing economies overcome barriers to financial inclusion and long-term growth?
  • How can financial risk management tools be adapted to address climate and environmental uncertainties?
