Barry is Professor of Retail Banking within Loughborough Business School and the Central Bank of Malta Visiting Professor of Economics at the University of Malta. His main research interests are in the area of strategies in retail banking and within this field he has published extensively on delivery channels, quality of service, customer retention branch efficiency and the internationalisation of banks. He also has a research interest in bank regulation and market discipline and more recently has been examining the banker-customer relationship in the U.K. small and medium sized business sector.
Barry was the joint editor of The Service Industries Journal from 1992 to 2009 and is on the editorial board of several refereed journals. He has written and contributed to more than 30 books on banking and finance, and has published more than 50 refereed papers. In 1992 he received the Literati Club award for excellence and in 1997 received the most outstanding paper award. In 2003 he obtained an entry in Who’s Who in the World and in 2005 was appointed a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers. Throughout his career he has acted as a consultant for numerous organisations, which inter alia include the Co-operative Bank, the Federation of Small Businesses, Royal Bank of Scotland, Coventry Building Society, HSBC, Lloyds TSB, and the Staffordshire Building Society
