Digital health and public futures

We are pioneering explorations of how social media and digital technologies impact public health and mental wellbeing, our research explores the opportunities and challenges of big data, AI, and machine learning in healthcare.

CIM members Dr Martin Sykora and Dr Suzanne Elayan lead pioneering explorations of how social media and digital technologies impact public health and mental wellbeing. Their research explores the opportunities and challenges of big data, AI, and machine learning in healthcare. This work is transforming how we understand stress, resilience, and community health at scale.

Key projects include Stresscapes, an ontology-based system that detects psychological stress expressed on social media, and advanced sentiment analysis tools like EMOTIVE, which capture emotional language patterns. Their research has informed studies on COVID-19 stress responses, resilience in disadvantaged communities, and digital interventions for people with severe disabilities.

Through major collaborations, including the EU Horizon 2020 project on healthy aging, they’ve developed AI-driven health assistants to promote wellbeing and lifestyle choices.

This work addresses global challenges, aligning with UN goals on social cohesion and resilience. By combining computational analytics with qualitative insight, CIM is shaping a future where digital platforms support health, not harm.
