Equitable sport

Loughborough University researchers look at issues facing disadvantages communities in sport. These under-represented groups can suffer from discrimination due race, age, sex, sexual/gender orientation, disabilities, background amongst other issues.

We have a proud track record of championing racial equality in sport, both at a university and national level. This includes hosting events such as the Black in Sport Summit, which is led by students who are frustrated with the lack of representation of black people in senior positions in sport. Loughborough University also hosted a ‘Knowledge Exchange’ event in 2023 bringing together key individuals from different sporting bodies to discuss what can be done to improve racial diversity in sport leadership roles.

Our Peter Harrison Centre for Disability Sport has achieved significant impact in shaping practices around disability sport through cutting-edge research. It focusses on two key areas in disability sport - performance sport and health and wellbeing. The Centre’s Director, Professor Vicky Tolfrey, received an ICP award recognising the excellence of the Centre in the field of disability sport. Recent work includes working with IWBF in achieving official confirmation of its compliance with the IPC’s Classification Code – ensuring the continued inclusion of wheelchair basketball in the upcoming Paralympic Games.
