Founded in 1830, and now with 16,000 members worldwide, the RGS-IBG advances geography and supports geographers in the UK and across the world. The Council is the RGS-IBG’s board of trustees, responsible for its governance, strategic direction and decision-making. The 21 members of Council are nominated and elected for a three-year term of office by the Society’s Fellows.

Reader in Human Geography Dr James Esson was elected as Councillor in the Society’s Research and Higher Education Committee, which guides the RGS-IBG’s work to promote and support geographers, geographical communities and geographical research.

Commenting on his success, James said: “Firstly, I would like to thank my colleagues and peers for electing me to represent them on Council. I’m truly grateful for this incredible opportunity. This is an amazing time to be a geographer because the discipline addresses issues impacting humanity, the environment and everything in-between. I look forward to working with the other trustees to help the RGS-IBG engage a more diverse national and international audience using progressive research and teaching activities.”

Michael HoylerHead of Geography and Environment added: “I’m absolutely delighted that James has been elected to this key position. The Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) is one of the foremost learned societies for geography in the world. Having a say in shaping its strategic direction demonstrates the esteem in which James is held in the wider geographical community. I know James will be a fantastic ambassador for geography and a strong voice in the governance of its leading society.”
